Baku Port's bulk cargo throughput up 46% in Q1
On April 8, Azerbaijan’s “Report” news agency reported that, according to data from Azerbaijan Railways, the volume of bulk cargo handled at the Port of Baku in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 46% year-on-year. In March alone, bulk cargo throughput reached 162,000 tonnes, a 94% year-on-year increase, setting a new monthly record for bulk cargo handling at the port.
The first phase of the Port of Baku was completed in 2018, with a current annual throughput capacity of 15 million tonnes of cargo and 100,000 TEUs. The second phase is under construction; upon completion, the port’s annual cargo handling capacity is expected to rise to 25 million tonnes and 500,000 TEUs. A fertilizer terminal with an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes is currently being built within the port, which will ensure that the abundant fertilizer resources from Central Asia can be regularly shipped to Western countries via Azerbaijan. In addition, plans have been finalized for the construction of a grain terminal and a TIR Park (a dedicated truck parking and logistics complex for long-haul road transport) within the port area.
